“KFC let’s go, let’s go, let’s go!” was the common phrase shouted during the recent exciting KFC Eastern Canada Kids Village (KV) held on July 23-25, 2010 at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario simultaneous with the CFC Easter Canada Conference. There were a total of 92 children from Winnipeg , Hamilton , Toronto , Ottawa and Montreal present.
The weekend opened with a celebration of the Holy Mass presided by Fr. Gary from the Annunciation of our Lord Parish in Hamilton . After the vibrant opening ceremony for both CFC Conference and KFC KV the children were introduced to their group facilitators who were responsible for them for the entire weekend. There were ten energetic groups that were formed – Ruby Rangers, Gold Raiders, Silver Seekers, Sapphire Hunters, Emerald Explorers, Crystal Catchers, Diamond Diggers, Topaz Troopers, Pearl Pioneers and Onyx Outlaws — led by amazing “kuyas” and “ates” from YFC. The kids performed group cheers that allowed them to get to know their teammates better. Everyone joined in the games and praise songs that followed. Session 1 entitled “Life is a Great Adventure” was given by Abby and Reggie who were also in charge of icebreaker games as the fun police for the weekend.
The second day of KV was filled with non-stop events. After singing songs of praise during Kidspraise (kids worship), all the groups immediately set out to take part in the Adventure Challenges that brought the kids to various parts of the campus to do many exciting tasks. The afternoon was filled with workshops aimed at teaching the kids more about their journey in faith, their roles as a young son and daughter in their families and what it means to be a young hero in the world today. Even though the rain started to pour later that afternoon, it did not dampen the spirit of the kids who enjoyed themselves thoroughly as they traveled from one workshop session to another.
Session 2 called “My Journey with my Family” was given by the beloved twins, Andrea and Alyza Reodica who shared about their lives as daughters and sisters in their own family. The next portion of the KV was the Kids Got Talent competition which showcased several children who displayed their talents in singing, dancing, playing instruments and reciting a speech. The judges, composed of Couple Coordinators and some YFC leaders, found it challenging to narrow down who the winner would be but in the end it was a unanimous vote for Julia Cervantes, whose performance in the reciting of her emotional speech blew everyone’s minds away. This was then followed by the much anticipated Session 3, a play entitled “Quest for the Fullness of Life” which featured a remarkable cast of YFC volunteers who had been working tirelessly in the weeks leading up to KV in order to put together an entertaining production. To end the evening, the kids were given a treat in the form of an Adventure Carnival. With a set up very similar to “Chuck-E-Cheese” there were games to be played, food to be eaten and prizes to be won by all. It was definitely a fun atmosphere and a perfect way to wrap up an incredibly full day.
Sunday morning began with the celebration of Holy Mass, presided by Msgr. Wayne Kirkpatrick. A summary video of the KV weekend was presented to the parents at the CFC Conference and the excitement peaked as the invitation was revealed for the upcoming International Kids Village in Singapore in December 2010. The kids were then led to their final session entitled, “The Real Treasure” given by Adrian Domingo, another mission-ready YFC brother that the kids looked up to. More songs were sung, games played and jokes told from among the kids themselves.
Finally, the awards were presented to the various groups and to the “Adventure Boy and Girl” for the weekend. Over 50 YFC ROCK leaders and all KFC Couple Coordinators helped in making the KV truly successful. Several YFC and HOLD volunteers also helped with Kidswatch and SFC volunteers assisted with First Aid and Workshops. A special mention was given to ROCK leaders, Agnes Nazareno and Emilie Camaganaccan who both served with exceptional servants’ hearts during the entire KV. Needless to say, everyone at KV, whether participants or service team, truly had the ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME!

2010 CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS

Christ’s power and majesty was truly something to behold. Brock University in St Catharines , Niagara was transformed into heaven here on earth as we witnessed God’s amazing grace during the celebration of the 2010 CFC Eastern Canada and KFC Kids Village Conferences.
The overwhelming success left those who attended craving for more. Both conferences, held on the weekend of July 23-25, were truly inspiring and spiritually nourishing. Almost 800 CFC and KFC members from all over Toronto, Hamilton, Windsor, Ottawa, Montreal, Winnipeg, Bermuda and US, converged at Brock University to attend the twin conferences.
The celebration centered on our 2010 CFC theme “Fullness of Life in Christ” and was based on Colossians 2:6-7: “Since you have accepted Christ Jesus as Lord, live in union with Him. Keep your roots deep on Him, build your lives on Him, and become stronger in your faith as you were taught. And be filled with thanksgiving.”
The various talks were focused on a call to each CFC and its Family Ministry members to experience more deeply the fullness of our life and mission in CFC which is anchored in our Lord Jesus Christ. The twin mission of building the Church of the home and building the Church of the poor with Christ at its center, remains as our holistic and integrated mission. The conference also sounded a renewed call for us to strengthen the basics of personal and community life – to live in union with Christ, to keep our lives rooted in Him, to grow more strongly in our faith and, to be thankful for all that He has blessed us with and for what is still to come.
The conference started with a Mass celebrated by Fr. Gary Schlack, Parish Priest of Annunciation of Our Lord Parish in Hamilton . After the praise and worship, the conference continued with a Parade of Colours followed by a short but beautifully choreographed creative number from CFC Toronto. Ouel Gardon and Grace Parillas, FM coordinators and Jun Clarito, Regional Head for Ontario , officially declared the KFC and CFC conference open respectively.
The Saturday session started, as usual, with a mass celebrated by Fr. Mike McHugh, Parish Priest of Holy Family Roman Catholic Church also in Hamilton . This was followed by a series of talks, sharings and intermittent creative performances. All the talks and sharings were truly powerful and inspiring. In fact, all who heard them were quite moved emotionally and spiritually. The night ended with the very lively “Festival of Choirs” competition participated by all the areas. The “Trio Los Amigos” and participating choirs really gave the audience something to enjoy and remember after a heavy dosage of spiritual nourishment during the day. The KFC Kids Village conference, on the other hand, brought fun, laughter and lifelong memories for the kids through various activities, games, workshops all in a spirit of fun. They also held their own version of “KFC’s Got Talent” competition.
Msgr. Wayne Kirkpatrick, Administrator in the Diocese St. Catharines, officiated the Sunday Mass. In his homily, he called upon all CFC members to be true instruments of God’s love, mercy and compassion by living their faith and their committed service specially to those who are in need. He thanked CFC for their strong commitment to evangelization and helping priests through their various work in their respective parishes.
The mass was followed by praise and worship and the weekend summed up by Melo Villaroman, CFC Family Ministries International Director, who gave a truly powerful, insightful, reassuring and inspiring review vis-à-vis the weekend’s talks. The last day was filled with emotion when, initially, Melo requested participants to make a personal reflection while the song “Sometimes” was sung live by the Music Ministry in the background. This was followed by a request for husbands to pray over their wives that ended with a loving embrace and a rose offering. Thereafter, he also asked each member to approach a brother or a sister in the hall who, in one way or another, has touched their lives and offer a “Thank you.” The atmosphere turned into a swelling of emotions as several exchanges of gratitude and loving embraces were manifested in the entire gymnasium.
The very energetic Ricky Cuenca, the newly-designated Chief Executive Officer of ANCOP, brought the conference to a fitting denouement by leading the final mini-praisefest of the conference and getting everybody dancing, jumping and shouting for the glory of God.
One word to sum up the entire conference — AMAZING!
Congratulations to all and we pray that the conference experience will remain in our hearts and inspire us to a greater commitment of service to our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
See you all in Quebec for the 2011 CFC Eastern Canada Conference!
